REGGIE DOKES - My Electronic Mind (PSYCHOSTASIA RECORDINGS)  What is immediately apparent from the moment you hit the play button on the second full-length album to be released on Psychostasia Recordings, is that Reggie Dokes certainly doesn’t make music that can be pigeon-holed. Sure, those now familiar, organic, Afro-rhythms and jazz influences provide the backbone to Dokes’ sound, interjected with moments of unadultered electronic beauty, but this album is indeed as Dokes states in the accompanying sleevenotes, “emotive mood music” - the perfect example being the opening trac, ‘Circumstances of Man’ which sets the tone about as tenderly as anyone could wish for. Favourites have to be ‘Black Children of the Ghetto’ and ‘My Electronic Mind’, both with their shuffling, organic basslines and poignant piano strokes, which definitely convey sentiment to the listener – let’s hope these two make it onto vinyl EPs at some point. ‘Purple Bliss’ gets busier, with some definite techno infusions and subtle strings, while ‘Love Circuits’, a downbeat, Detroit house piece ties up the proceedings nicely. Mood music this certainly is, quite what that mood is depends a lot on the listener, but all we can say is, if you ain’t yet diggin’ this vibe then you’re seriously missing out on something.
